昔むかし、土佐とさの山奥やまおくの二淀川によどがわのほとりに、成山なるやまという小ちいさな村むらがありました

A long time ago, there was a small village called Naruyama on the banks of the Niyodo River deep in the mountains of Tosa.

その村むらに、養甫尼ようほうに（ようほに）という一人ひとりの尼あまさんが住すんでいました

There lived a nun named Yohoni in that village.

もともと養甫尼ようほうには、立派りっぱな殿様とのさまの奥方おくがただったのですが、戦せんに敗やぶれて殿様とのさまも死しんでしまったため、この世よを憂ういて尼あまになったのでした

Originally, Yoho-ni was the wife of a respectable lord, but when the lord died in the battle, she became worried about the world and became a nun.

養甫尼ようほうにの所ところに、甥おいの三郎左さぶろうざ（さぶろうざ）も住すみつくようになり、二人ふたりで静しずかに暮くらしていました

His nephew Saburoza also came to live in Yohouni, and the two of them lived quietly together.

ある日ひ、養甫尼ようほうにが山やまで薪たきぎを集あつめていると、傷きずついた武士ぶしが倒たおれていました

One day, while Yoho-ni was collecting firewood in the mountains, she saw an injured samurai lying on the ground.

養甫尼ようほうにが手厚てあつく介抱かいほうしてあげると、その男おとこは元気げんきを取とり戻もどしました

After Yoho-ni carefully cared for him, the man regained his strength.

武士ぶしは、伊予いよの国くにの新之丞しんのじょう（しんのじょう）という男おとこで、山やまに生うえている楮こうぞ（こうぞ）の木きから紙かみを作つくる方法ほうほうを知しっていました

The samurai was a man named Shinnojo from the province of Iyo, and he knew how to make paper from the kozo tree that grows in the mountains.

養甫尼ようほうにと三郎左さぶろうざはさっそく紙かみすき小屋こやを作つくり、夢中むちゅうになって紙かみを作つくりました

Yoho-ni and Saburoza immediately built a paper-making hut and were absorbed in making paper.

やがて春はるになり、養甫尼ようほうには桜さくらの花はなを入いれた紙かみを作つくってみました

Eventually, spring came, and Yoho-ni tried making paper with cherry blossoms in it.

それは見事みごとな仕上しあがりで、季節きせつの草花くさばなを染そめあげていつしか「七色紙なないろがみ」といわれ、幕府ばくふに献上けんじょうする「土佐とさの特産品とくさんひん」としての貴重きちょうな物ものとなりました

It had a beautiful finish, dyed with seasonal flowers, and became known as ``seven-colored paper,’’ and became a valuable ``Tosa specialty product’’ presented to the shogunate.

殿様とのさまから紙かみの役人やくにんとして任命にんめいされた三郎左さぶろうざは大喜おおよろこびでした

Saburoza was overjoyed when he was appointed by the lord as a paper official.

ところが、突然とつぜんに新之丞しんのじょうが国くにへ帰かえりたいと言いい出だしました

However, Shinnojo suddenly announced that he wanted to return to his country.

もし、新之丞しんのじょうがここを出でて行おこなったら「七色紙なないろがみの秘法ひほう」がよそへ漏もれてしまうと心配しんぱいした三郎左さぶろうざは、見送みおくりの途中とちゅうで「坂さかノ峠とうげ」まで来きたところで新之丞しんのじょうを刀かたなで切きり殺ころしてしまいました

Saburosa was worried that if Shinnojo left, the secret of the seven-colored paper would be leaked, so when he reached Sakanotoge on his way to see him off, he attacked Shinnojo with a sword. I cut it to death

その後ご、養甫尼ようほうにや三郎左さぶろうざがどうなったかわかりませんが、土佐とさの成山なるやまは今いまも紙かみすきの里さとと呼よばれています
