顔かおを真まっ赤かにするのは「最もっとも人間にんげんらしい特有とくゆうの表情ひょうじょう」だとチャールズ・ダーウィンは言いった

Charles Darwin said that blushing is ``the most characteristically human expression.’’

しかしニワトリにもこの表情ひょうじょうがあり、恐怖きょうふや興奮こうふんで顔かおが赤あかくなるという研究結果けんきゅうけっかが発表はっぴょうされた

However, research has revealed that chickens also have this expression, and their faces turn red due to fear or excitement.

この研究けんきゅうは、フランスの国立農学研究所こくりつのうがくけんきゅうじょやトゥール大学だいがくの研究けんきゅうチームが２４日にじゅうよっかの米科学誌べいかがくしプロスワンに発表はっぴょうした

The study was published by a research team from France’s National Institute of Agriculture and the University of Tours in the American scientific journal Plos One on the 24th.

それによると、めんどりは落おち着ついている時ときは頭あたまの羽毛うもうを膨ふくらませているが、餌えさを食たべるのを待まって興奮こうふんしているような時ときや、捕獲ほかくされるなどの恐怖きょうふを感かんじている時ときは、数秒間すうびょうかん、顔かおを紅潮こうちょうさせることが分わかった

According to this study, when hens are calm, they fluff up the feathers on their heads, but when they are excited waiting to eat, or when they are afraid of being captured. I found it flushed my face for a few seconds.

``In humans, blushing can be associated with embarrassment or can express a wide range of emotions, such as anger or joy.’’ ``While it is not possible to directly compare the emotions of chickens to these human emotions, ”We found that chickens also turn red when they experience strong emotions,” the researchers explain.

顔かおの赤あかみが薄うすく頭部とうぶの羽毛うもうが膨ふくらんでいるのは、ニワトリが落おち着ついて安心あんしんしている表あらわれであり、鶏にわとりの健康状態けんこうじょうたいの判断はんだんに利用りようできるかもしれないと研究けんきゅうチームは指摘してきしている

The research team points out that the pale redness on the face and the puffiness of the feathers on the head are signs that the chicken is calm and at ease, and could be used to determine the chicken’s health status.

動物どうぶつの顔かおの表情ひょうじょうについては、犬いぬや馬うま、豚ぶた、ネズミなどの哺乳類ほにゅうるいに関かんする研究けんきゅうはあったものの、鳥類ちょうるいはあまり広ひろく研究けんきゅうされていなかった

Regarding the facial expressions of animals, although there has been research on mammals such as dogs, horses, pigs, and rats, birds have not been extensively studied.

研究けんきゅうチームはフランスの農場のうじょうで２種しゅのめんどり１７羽わを４週間しゅうかんにわたって観察かんさつし、日常にちじょうの行動こうどうやさまざまな刺激しげきに対たいする反応はんのうを記録きろく

The research team observed 17 hens of two species over a four-week period on a farm in France, recording their daily behavior and reactions to various stimuli.

映像えいぞうから２秒びょうごとに画像がぞうを抽出ちゅうしゅつし、それぞれの横顔よこがおを調しらべた

Images were extracted every two seconds from the video and the profile of each was examined.

顔かおが赤あかくなる仕組しくみは解明かいめいできなかったものの、ニワトリの感情かんじょうは、とさかや肉髯にくひげ（にくぜん）よりも、頬ほおや耳朶じだ（じだ）の方ほうに表あらわれると結論付けつろんづけている

Although they were unable to explain the mechanism by which their faces turn red, they concluded that chickens’ emotions are more expressed in their cheeks and earlobes than in their crests and beards.
