Ancient Roman mosaic discovered under the sea in Naples, Italy

A mosaic from the floor of an ancient Roman mansion was discovered on the ocean floor off the coast of Naples in southern Italy.

Built in the ancient spa town of Baiae, popular in the late Roman Empire and home to the residences of Julius Caesar and Emperor Nero, the mansion was located in part of an area that was submerged by a geological phenomenon called slow ground motion.
In slow ground motions, underground pressure causes the ground to rise or, as in this case, sink.

Preliminary research indicates that the floor is primarily made of recycled irregularly shaped marble fragments.
This technique is said to have been common from the 3rd to the 5th century AD.
