By the 21st, public health officials in Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil, announced that six people had been arrested for killing stolen horses and selling them to restaurants pretending to be beef.
In a statement, the six people pointed out that they were handing over 800 kg of horse meat per week to restaurants in the Caxias do Sul area.
It seems that up to 60% of restaurants with beef dishes purchased it for steaks and hamburgers without knowing that the contents were horse meat.
The inspector also found that rotten pork and turkey were mixed in the hamburger.
According to the prosecutor’s office who managed the investigation, when he investigated a restaurant in the same area that sold hamburgers, he confirmed that horse meat was contaminated with DNA.
