Princess Kako, the second daughter of Prince and Princess Akishino, who has been staying in Brazil since the 5th of this month for international goodwill, has almost completed her official schedule in Rio de Janeiro, the seventh city she has visited. After viewing the ratification documents of the treaty that marked the beginning of diplomatic relations between the two countries, she was welcomed by Japanese Brazilians and others.

Princess Kako, who arrived the previous night in Rio de Janeiro, the former capital known for the Rio Carnival, visited Corcovado Hill, famous for its giant Christ statue, early in the morning of the 13th local time.

And then, after seeing the beautiful city surrounded by the sea and mountains spreading out below, I looked back on my stay so far and thought, As I watched the morning sun shine over this vast sea, I recalled the faces of all the people I have met up to today.

In the afternoon, at the Diplomatic Archives, you saw the instrument of ratification for the Treaty of Amity, Commerce, and Navigation concluded when Japan and Brazil established diplomatic relations in 1895, and then received an explanation about how subsequent bilateral treaties regarding Japanese immigration and other matters were concluded.

After this, she attended a welcoming event organized by local Japanese and Nikkei residents. When the children performed a samba, Princess Kako smiled, gave a big round of applause, and said, Thank you very much for showing me such a wonderful samba.

And then, taking the podium, I said, “During this visit to Brazil, as I reflect on the difficult path our predecessors walked, I am once again deeply moved by the history of the Japanese community.”

I am pleased that, although our two countries are geographically distant, our hearts are close.

On top of that, I believe that the friendship between Japan and Brazil is blossoming in various fields, and it seems that new buds are beginning to form as well.

Princess Kako, who learned about the history of Japanese immigrants who laid the foundation for the worlds largest Japanese community across Brazil and interacted with local people, as well as attended events such as the ceremony commemorating the 130th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations, has now almost completed her official schedule in the country.

After seeing Iguazu Falls, one of the worlds three largest waterfalls spanning the border with Argentina, on the 15th local time, Princess Kako will take connecting commercial flights and return to Japan on the 17th of this month.
