Japan>A research group including the Forestry and Forest Products Research Institute has estimated that feral cats on Mikura Island in the Izu Islands, which is the largest breeding ground for streaked shearwaters breeding in the seas near Japan, prey on approximately 35,000 streaked shearwaters annually.
オオミズナギドリは、日本近海で繁殖する渡り鳥で、最大の繁殖地として知られる伊豆諸島の御蔵島では1970年代後半に推定で最大350万羽が繁殖していましたが、2016年には10万羽程度まで減少し、原因として野生化したネコによる捕食が指摘されています
The streaked shearwater is a migratory bird that breeds near the coast of Japan. On Mikura Island in the Izu Islands, known as the largest breeding ground, an estimated maximum of 3.5 million birds were breeding in the late 1970s, but by 2016 the number had decreased to around 100,000. The decline is thought to be due to predation by feral cats.
捕食の影響を把握するため森林総合研究所の亘悠哉チーム長らのグループは去年1月から3月にかけて御蔵島のネコのふんを調べました
To understand the impact of predation, a group led by Team Leader Yuya Wataru of the Forestry and Forest Products Research Institute examined the feces of cats on Mikura Island from January to March last year.
その結果、これまで知られていたオオミズナギドリの飛来時期よりも1か月余り早い1月29日に採取されたふんから羽などが見つかり、ネコが捕食する期間が想定より長いことが明らかになったということです
As a result, feathers and other remains were found in feces collected on January 29th, more than a month earlier than the previously known arrival period of the Streaked Shearwater, revealing that the period during which cats prey on them is longer than previously assumed.
また、2月以降にはふんからオオミズナギドリの体の一部が見つかる割合が急激に増加することもわかりました
It was also found that, after February, the proportion of droppings containing parts of the streaked shearwaters body increased sharply.
こうしたデータをもとに推定したネコ1頭が捕食するオオミズナギドリは330羽で、1年間で少なくとも3万4980羽が捕食されていると試算しています
Based on this data, it is estimated that one cat preys on 330 streaked shearwaters, and at least 34,980 birds are eaten in a year.
