Nobel Peace Prize awards ceremony begins - special attention paid to the messages of peace and human rights
This year’s awards ceremony, which just began at 9pm Japanese time, gave the Nobel Peace Prize to several human rights organizations focused on Ukraine, Russia, and Belarus.
With Russia’s continued military invasions into Ukraine, attention will be paid to what the awardees will address in terms of peace and human rights in their speeches.

This year’s awardees are Ales Bialiatski, a Belarusian human rights activist who has worked for years to promote the right to critique political power and protect citizens’ basic human rights; Memorial, a Russian human rights organization; and a Ukranian human rights organization called Center for Civil Liberties.
The awards ceremony, held in the city hall of Oslo, capital of Norway, started in the afternoon on the 10th their time, or the 10th at 9pm Japan time, and as the medals are being awarded, various representatives are giving speeches.
Because Belarusian Bialiatski is currently being imprisoned and cannot attend the awards ceremony, his wife, Natallia Pinchuk, is attending in his place.
The previous day, on the 9th, at a local interview with authorized personnel was held in Oslo, Center for Civil Liberties representative Oleksandra Matviichuk brought to attention, “for many years now, Russia has committed war offenses against many countries of this world and has not been punished, so they believe they can do anything.
Criminals like Russian president Putin and Belarus president Lukashenko need to be forced to take responsibility in the international courtrooms.”
With Russia’s continued invasions into Ukraine, people are interested in hearing what messages the awardees have about peace and human rights beyond country borders.
Peace prize laureate selection committee head: “we protect the interests of people who desire peace and don’t support war”
In regard to choosing human rights organizations and activists from Russia, Ukraine, and Belarus, the selection committee stated, “the message of this peace prize is that in order to promote human rights, critique governments, and influence laws, civil society is essential.
Without a doubt, the three laureates we chose each seriously work on these issues in their own spheres.
Civic activism such as Memorial have become an antidote to authoritarian domination,” giving high praise to the years of activism.
In addition, in regards to the significance of this peace prize during the ongoing invasion of Russia into Ukraine, they emphasized, “right now, what is exceedingly important is not government interests, but to, above all else, protect the interests of people who, in the midst of wars happening right now, do not support cruel acts and instead wish for peace.” They also emphasized, “the Nobel Peace Prize cannot end wars.
“However, we do believe that we can point out what kinds of values are necessary in order to find ways to replace war.”
Additionally, in regards to the current imprisonment of Belarusian human rights activist Ales Bialiatski, they expressed concern, saying “this is an extremely serious situation.
“We are saddened that that he has not been released and cannot come.
“The fact that peaceful protests are not allowed and that not just him, but countless others are being restricted because of political offenses, is a tragedy.”
Head of committee Reiss-Andersen stated about the speeches that would occur at the awards ceremony on the 10th, “each laureate has the same message, the same goals, and hold the same principles in constructing a peaceful society.
“I am expecting their speeches to have the many of the same common features,” expressing hope for powerful messages wishing for peace and human rights beyond the antagonism between countries.
