Shizuoka Prefecture’s Ito City Mayor Maki Takubo, who had been suspected of falsifying her academic credentials regarding university graduation, held a press conference on the 2nd and revealed, “After checking with the university, it turned out that they could not confirm my graduation and that I had been expelled.”

On the other hand, it is stated that since the academic background of graduating from university was not disclosed by the person themselves during the election, there is no issue under the Public Offices Election Act.

In the mayoral election held in Ito City this May, Mayor Takubo was elected for the first time. The citys public relations magazine, published in June, states that he graduated from Toyo University Faculty of Law in 1992, but it was pointed out in the city council that there are suspicions he may have falsified his academic background.

Mayor Takubo held a press conference on the 2nd and revealed that when he visited the university himself in June to confirm, I was unable to confirm my graduation and found out that I had been expelled.

Also, I didnt really attend classes properly in the latter half of my university years.

I cant deny at all if Im told that I misunderstood, he said, but also stated, Since I did not publicly announce my university graduation history during the election, there is no problem under the Public Offices Election Act.

When asked about his resignation, he said, I dont want to do something like running away.

I intend to fulfill my responsibilities to the very end, he said.

Mayor Takubo, when the issue of his academic background was raised at the city council on June 25, said that while there were anonymous documents circulating, Its not that I wont explain, but I want to maintain a stance of not responding at all.

Regarding this issue, it has been decided that the establishment of a Article 100 Committee with strong investigative authority will be discussed in the city council in the future.

City Council Chairman: It turned out the diploma was fake. After being shown a document that was supposed to be a university diploma by Mayor Takubo, City Council Chairman Hiromichi Nakajima spoke to the press following the mayors conference.

Chairman Nakajima said that on the 4th of last month, when he visited the mayors office with the vice chairman to greet Mayor Takubo, the mayor suddenly showed them a document claiming it was a diploma.

Chairman Nakajima said, I could see the words Faculty of Law and Maki Takubo, but they really only showed them to me for a brief moment.

It turned out that you had been expelled, so the diploma you showed us was a fake.

He said, Since it caused confusion throughout the entire city of Ito, we want the council to take full responsibility.

And on the final day of the city council meeting this month, the council revealed that it is considering the establishment of a special investigation committee under Article 100 and the submission of a resolution recommending resignation.
