On the other hand, Typhoon No. 5 has just turned into an extratropical cyclone, but strong winds and rough seas are expected to continue in northern Japan, so please be very careful of strong winds and high waves.

In the one hour up to 9 a.m., heavy rainfall was observed: 42 millimeters by a rain gauge installed by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism in Ena City, Gifu Prefecture, and 34 millimeters by a rain gauge installed by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government in Hachioji City.

It is expected that the atmosphere will remain extremely unstable, mainly in the Tokai and Kanto-Koshin regions, and there is a risk of very heavy rain accompanied by localized thunderstorms.

Especially in Shizuoka Prefecture, there is a possibility that a linear band of heavy rain will form in the next few hours, rapidly increasing the risk of disasters.

Since moist air will continue to flow in, there is a risk of heavy rain continuing mainly in the Tokai region and on the Pacific side of eastern Japan through around the 17th.

The Japan Meteorological Agency is urging people to be on alert for landslides, flooding in low-lying areas, rising river levels and overflows, as well as to watch out for lightning, tornadoes and other severe gusts of wind, and hail.

A possible tornado in Gifu City? On the morning of the 15th in Gifu City, there were multiple reports of damage, such as roof tiles being blown off houses and utility poles being knocked over. The meteorological observatory and other authorities believe the damage was caused by a tornado, and have dispatched staff to the area to investigate the specific situation.

According to the police, there have been no injuries so far.

In Gifu City and other areas, residents have reported incidents such as signboards hitting and breaking car windows, but according to the police, no injuries have been reported so far.

Typhoon No. 5 became an extratropical cyclone. Meanwhile, around 2 a.m., Typhoon No. 5 made landfall near Cape Erimo in Hokkaido, moved into the Sea of Okhotsk, and turned into an extratropical cyclone at 9 a.m.

This is the first time a typhoon has made landfall in Hokkaido since August 2016.

Waves accompanied by swells will be high over the seas around Hokkaido and Tohoku, and rough seas are expected to continue through the evening of the 15th.

The Japan Meteorological Agency is urging people to be very cautious of high waves and strong winds, as well as sudden heavy rain, lightning, gusts of wind, and hail.

A heatwave is expected mainly in western Japan. In addition, it is expected to be sunny mainly in western Japan, with temperatures rising.

The daytime high temperatures are expected to reach 37°C in Maizuru City, Kyoto Prefecture; 36°C in Takamatsu City, Tottori City, and Fukui City; and 35°C in Oita City and Matsue City, making for extremely hot days. Heatstroke alerts have also been issued in some areas.
