The union of over 17,000 workers engaged in loading and unloading cargo at ports nationwide is on strike starting the morning of the 20th.

Wages are being demanded, and it is said that work has stopped at ports nationwide.

The strike is being conducted by the National Federation of Dockworkers Unions of Japan and the All Japan Dockworkers Union, which are unions of workers engaged in loading and unloading cargo at ports nationwide.

According to the union, it consists of over 17,000 members, and during this years spring labor offensive, they demanded to raise the basic salary by at least 30,000 yen per month or more than 10%, and to set the starting salary at a minimum of 220,000 yen, in light of rising prices. However, negotiations with the industry group Japan Port Transport Association did not reach an agreement.

For this reason, a 24-hour strike began on the morning of the 20th, and cargo loading and unloading operations have stopped at ports nationwide, including Tokyo Port and Yokohama Port.

Strikes were also held on the 30th of last month and the 13th of this month, and according to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, there were delays in the handling of cargo at some ports. However, since it was Sunday, when the volume of transactions is lower than on weekdays, there was no major disruption.

At a press conference held by the two unions this month, Ichiro Takeuchi, the Central Executive Committee Chairman of the National Federation of Port Workers Unions, stated, We have been negotiating with the association to establish attractive port labor, but there has been no progress.

If negotiations do not reach an agreement, we are considering continuing to strike in the future, they said.

On the other hand, a representative from the Japan Port Transport Association stated, We have been notified that strikes will continue to occur, so we want to fully engage in labor-management negotiations to minimize the impact.
