On July 3, 2021, a large-scale mudslide occurred in the Izusan area of Atami City, where illegally constructed embankments upstream of the Aizome River collapsed, resulting in the deaths of 28 people, including disaster-related fatalities.

On the 3rd, marking four years since the mudslide occurred, Atami City held a memorial ceremony in the disaster-stricken Izusan area starting at 9 a.m.

At the ceremony, after the names of the 28 deceased were read aloud, a total of 55 people—including the bereaved families of the victims and government officials—offered a moment of silence.

Next, Atami City Mayor Sakae Saito gave a speech, saying, When I think of the feelings of the bereaved families, which have yet to heal, I am at a loss for words.

We have been making steady progress toward recovery, step by step, over the four years since the disaster.

We would like to continue providing necessary support while listening to the voices of the community, he said.

In addition, Governor Suzuki of Shizuoka Prefecture stated, The prefecture is working on the restoration and reconstruction of the Aizome River, and we will do our best to ensure that the residents forced to evacuate can return home as soon as possible and regain their peaceful daily lives.

After this, the attendees offered white chrysanthemums at the flower stand and prayed for the victims.

In the disaster-stricken area, the return of residents has not progressed due to delays in reconstruction work. According to the city, 21 households, totaling 43 people, are still living as evacuees, and the city continues to provide support.
