Due to the effects of Typhoon No. 12, which crossed the southern part of Kyushu, Kagoshima Prefecture has experienced a series of floods and landslides. Developed rain clouds continue to cover the area, loosening the ground and causing river water levels to rise in some places.

Due to the slow movement of the typhoon, there is a risk that the total rainfall will increase even further, so strict caution is needed against landslides and river flooding.

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, Typhoon No. 12, which changed from a tropical depression over the sea west of Kagoshima Prefecture, made landfall near Hioki City, Kagoshima Prefecture, on the evening of the 21st.

Typhoon No. 12 is believed to be moving slowly northeast over the sea, about 40 kilometers southeast of Hyuga City, Miyazaki Prefecture, as of 9 a.m.

The central pressure is 1006 hectopascals, the maximum wind speed near the center is 18 meters per second, and the maximum instantaneous wind speed is 25 meters per second. Strong winds of 15 meters per second or more are blowing within 150 kilometers to the east of the center and within 110 kilometers to the west of the center.

The typhoon moved off the coast of Miyazaki Prefecture early in the morning of the 22nd, but developed rain clouds around the typhoon continue to cover mainly Kagoshima Prefecture.

Between 7 and 8 a.m., rain gauges installed by Kagoshima Prefecture recorded very heavy rainfall of 50 millimeters in Minamikyushu City and heavy rainfall of 35 millimeters in Makurazaki City.

The amount of rainfall in the 24 hours up to 8 a.m. was 320 millimeters in Kire, Kagoshima City, 305 millimeters in Ibusuki City, and 299 millimeters in Minamisatsuma City.

5 millimeters in Hioki City, 270 millimeters, and 260 millimeters in Tanegashima.

Both have seen heavy rainfall exceeding the average amount for the entire month of August, with 5 millimeters or more.

Due to the rain that has fallen so far, the risk of landslides has increased in Kagoshima Prefecture, and Landslide Warning Information has been issued in some areas. In addition, there are rivers that have exceeded the flood danger level, and flood warning information has been issued for the Manose River, which flows through Minamisatsuma City and Minamikyushu City.

Here is the outlook for the future.

The typhoon is expected to move northeast off the coast of Miyazaki Prefecture without gaining much speed and turn into a tropical depression by around midday on the 22nd. However, since it is moving slowly, rain is expected to continue falling in the same areas, raising concerns that the total rainfall could increase further.

In southern Kyushu, there is a risk of very heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms in some areas, and the amount of rainfall in the 24 hours until the morning of the 23rd is expected to be up to 150 millimeters in some places.

Especially in Kagoshima Prefecture excluding the Amami region, there is a possibility that a linear rainband will form through the afternoon of the 22nd, rapidly increasing the risk of disasters.

Please be extremely cautious of landslides and river flooding, and also be alert for flooding in low-lying areas.

Be aware of strong winds, high waves, lightning, and severe gusts such as tornadoes.

In Kagoshima Prefecture earlier this month, there were areas that suffered damage due to record-breaking heavy rain.

There are places where the ground has loosened or embankments have collapsed, so even if the rain weakens, please stay in a safe place.
