After that, Prime Minister Ishiba will hold a press conference for training purposes, explain the governments response, and make an appeal to the public.

On the 1st, various drills are scheduled to take place across the country, including a joint disaster prevention drill in Saitama City conducted by the one metropolis and three prefectures of the Kanto region and five designated cities.

It is assumed that the anticipated Nankai Trough megaquake will occur along the Nankai Trough, where the oceanic plate is subducting beneath the land plate, stretching from Suruga Bay in Shizuoka Prefecture to off the coast of Hyuga-nada in Kyushu.

According to the Cabinet Office and other sources, massive earthquakes have repeatedly occurred along the Nankai Trough at intervals of roughly 100 to 150 years. The governments Earthquake Research Committee estimates that there is about an 80% chance of a magnitude 8 to 9 megaquake occurring within the next 30 years.

The damage estimates in the event of a massive Nankai Trough earthquake were revised this March.

If a massive earthquake of magnitude 9 were to occur, intense shaking and large tsunamis would affect a wide area. Shaking with a seismic intensity of lower 6 or above is expected in 600 cities, towns, and villages across 24 prefectures from Kanagawa to Kagoshima, while a seismic intensity of 7 is expected in 149 cities, towns, and villages across 10 prefectures from Shizuoka to Miyazaki.

Tsunamis of over 3 meters are expected in 25 prefectures from Fukushima to Okinawa, and those of over 10 meters are expected in 13 prefectures from the Kanto region to Kyushu. In Kochi and Shizuoka prefectures, there is a risk that locally, waves could exceed 30 meters.

It is estimated that, in the worst case, the number of deaths will reach 298,000 nationwide, of which 215,000 will be caused by the tsunami and 73,000 will be victims of building collapses.

It is also assumed that 2.35 million buildings will be completely destroyed by intense shaking or lost to fires.

It has also had a major impact on the economy, and including the decline in productivity caused by the disaster, the economic damage is estimated to be over 270 trillion yen.

On the other hand, it is said that damage can be greatly reduced through measures such as early evacuation and earthquake-resistant construction.

If everyone evacuates immediately, the number of tsunami fatalities will decrease by about 70%. If earthquake-resistant construction reaches 100%, the number of completely destroyed buildings will decrease by about 70%, and deaths caused by building collapse are estimated to decrease by nearly 80%.

If the rate of furniture being secured reaches 100%, it is estimated that the number of people who die from falling furniture and similar accidents will decrease by about 70%.
