Due to the effects of a weather front and other factors, some areas in Akita Prefecture are experiencing record-breaking heavy rain, and the risk of disasters such as river flooding is rapidly increasing.

There is a risk of heavy rainfall exceeding the average for the entire month of September, especially on the Sea of Japan side of the Tohoku region, including Akita Prefecture. Please be extremely cautious of landslides, flooding of low-lying areas, and river overflows.

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, a warm and humid air mass is flowing into the front near northern Japan, causing developed rain clouds to continuously move into Akita Prefecture since the morning of the 2nd, resulting in very heavy rain.

This is the state of the Uchikawa River flowing through Yunomata, Uchikawa, Gojome Town, Akita Prefecture, as published on the River Disaster Prevention Information website of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism.

You can see that from a little after 8:30 a.m. on the 2nd, the river water overflowed and flowed into the surrounding area.

The river has been dug into the ground, so the overflowing water surface is at the same level as the ground.

Cases of people being swept away by overflowing water around such rivers keep occurring.

Please avoid unnecessary travel.

Additionally, the Koani River, which flows through the northern part of Akita Prefecture, exceeded the flood danger level at the Sugi Flower Observation Station in Kamikoani Village at 9:20 a.m.

In footage from before 10 a.m. taken by a river camera installed in Obayashi, Kamikoani Village nearby, you can see that the muddy brown river water is rising right up to just below the bridge girder, with the water level reaching both banks.

Also, footage from 11 a.m. captured by the river camera installed at Bussha in Kamikoani Village shows that the water in the Bussha River, a tributary of the Koani River, has overflowed, and nearby buildings are flooded.

Due to the rain that has fallen so far, there are already rivers that have overflowed in Akita Prefecture, and some rivers have exceeded the flood danger level.

Landslide warning information has been issued over a wide area as the risk of landslides has become extremely high.

Also, within the one hour leading up to 11 a.m., a rain gauge installed by Iwate Prefecture in Kuji City recorded heavy rainfall of 37 millimeters.

What is the outlook? As a low-pressure system passes along the front, there is a risk of very heavy rain continuing on the Sea of Japan side of the Tohoku region. In addition, rain is also expected to intensify in Hokkaido, Niigata Prefecture, and the Hokuriku region.

Strict caution is required for landslides, flooding in low-lying areas, and river overflows.
