On the 1st of this month, in a residential area of Setagaya Ward, Tokyo, Ji Won Ban 40, a self-employed South Korean national living in Minato Ward, Tokyo, was killed after being attacked with a knife. The Metropolitan Police arrested Yongjun Park 30, a South Korean national of unknown address and occupation who was the victim’s partner, on suspicion of murder.

According to the Metropolitan Police Department, the female victim rushed into a police box in Tokyo on the 29th of last month and consulted with them, saying that when she tried to break up with the suspect, who had come to Japan from South Korea and was staying at her home, he became violent. The police evacuated the woman and verbally instructed the suspect to stay away from her.

It was learned from interviews with investigative sources that three days before the incident, while the woman visited the police box, the suspect looked at her smartphone—which had been left at home—and checked her LINE messages with work associates, which is believed to have allowed him to know her schedule and whereabouts on the day of the incident.

When the suspects smartphone was analyzed, an image was found in which the womans LINE messages had been translated into Korean.

The suspect is believed to have purchased a fruit knife, thought to be the weapon, at a supermarket near the womans home the day before the incident, then surveyed the scene for about 10 minutes, and on the day of the incident, waited in ambush for the woman. The Metropolitan Police Department is investigating the details of the case.
